3 MYTHS ABOUT ABRASIVES

USE ORDINARY SAND FOR SANDBLASTING TECHNIQUE

The truth is, never use ordinary sand in your sandblasting cabinet.

Firstly, when sandblasting with ordinary sand, you will use twice as much sand than with other specialized abrasives.
Secondly, ordinary sand turns into fine sand very quickly after a couple of cycles, and will block up the dust bag and once fine it’s no longer any good for sandblasting.
Most importantly, it's content silicates, which can result in causing lung problems - silicosis.

DOESN'T MATTER WHAT ABRASIVE IS USED FOR GLASS SANDBLASTING

Incorrect.
Hardness of the abrasives is measured on the Mineral Scale for Hardness. Glass is on this scale at 5-6 points.
Accordingly, we must choose an abrasive which is harder than glass itself (aluminium oxide 8-9 points, silicon carbide 9-9.5points).
That’s why for example glass beads won’t ever have the same  effectiveness when sandblasting as aluminium oxide or silicon carbide.

NO NEED TO CHANGE ABRASIVE IN SADBLASTING CABINET

Well… Try to think about changing abrasive in the same way as changing the oil in your car- it must be changed eventually.
To overuse abrasive will slow down your production and efficiency in the same was that worn sand paper prolongs sanding time.
Don’t waste your time, be productive and change your abrasive on  a regular basis.
